| See Him there, the great I Am; A crown of thorns upon His head. The Father’s heart displayed for us; O God, we thank You for the cross. Lifted up on Calvary’s hill, We cursed Your name, and even still You bore our shame and paid the cost. O God, we thank You for the cross. Behold the Lamb, the story of redemption Written on His hands. Jesus, You will reign forevermore; The victory is Yours. | We sing Your praise; Endless hallelujahs to Your holy name. Jesus, You will reign forevermore; The victory is Yours. Offer up this sacrifice; For every sin, our Savior died. The Lord of Life can’t be contained; Our God has risen from the grave. Oh, our God has risen from the grave. When the age of death is done, We’ll see Your face bright as the sun. We’ll bow before the King of kings; O God, forever we will sing. |
“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’” (John 1:29 NKJV). This is the crux of the hymn “Behold The Lamb.” The hymn draws our attention to the God-Man on the cross, His death, His resurrection, and His return. The central focus, however, is that “story of redemption written on His hands,” as the chorus states. Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
The vivid imagery of the first two stanzas forces the worshiper to envision Christ on the Roman cross at Golgotha: His body beaten beyond recognition, the crown of thorns on His head. But the twist indeed is here: “The Father’s heart displayed for us.” We look to the cross of Calvary, seeing our Lord crucified, and the love of God on full display. The third verse writes “For every sin, our Savior died.” Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
But we thank God the story doesn’t end there. The hymn continues: “The Lord of Life can’t be contained; our God has risen from the grave…When the age of death is done, we’ll see Your face bright as the sun.” Christ is alive, and we will see Him face to face! What, then, is our right response? “We’ll bow before the King of kings; O God, forever we will sing.” Our right response is to worship and glorify Him. Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
Spotless Lamb, we worship You for Your great power. You take away the sin of the world, You conquered death, and You are returning soon! Help us, Your spotless bride, be ready for your return, and may we continue to look upon You as our wonderful Savior. Amen.
