| Worthy of every song we could ever sing Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe We live for You Jesus the name above every other name Jesus the only one who could ever save Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe We live for You, we live for You | Holy there is no one like You There is none beside You Open up my eyes in wonder Show me who You are And fill me with Your heart And lead me in Your love to those around me I will build my life upon Your love It is a firm foundation I will put my trust in You alone And I will not be shaken |
Peter, with John, stood before the council of priests, Sadducees, and others and stated with full confidence that “Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone’” (Acts 4:11 NLT). The apostle Paul uses a similar metaphor: “Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus Himself. We are carefully joined together in Him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord” (Ephesians 2:20–21 NLT).
The cornerstone, the first set stone in the foundation, needs to be put perfectly in place in order for the foundation to be secure. Christ is described as our cornerstone all throughout Scripture. In other words, He’s our firm foundation that we can build our lives on. The central theme of “Build My Life” is found in the bridge of the hymn: “I will build my life upon Your love; it is a firm foundation. I will put my trust in You alone and I will not be shaken.” It brings to mind the hymn of old: “On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand.” To build our lives on Christ is to build our lives securely.
If Christ is our cornerstone or our firm foundation, then He too is worthy of all praise. The verses of the hymn set the stage for the foundational theme: Christ’s great holiness. He’s “worthy of every song,” “worthy of all the praise,” and “worthy of every breath.” He’s holy, and there’s no one like Him! “Build My Life” offers to those who sing the hymn a chance to respond to God’s holiness and His unwavering presence. May we, the body of Christ, declare truthfully that we will build our lives on the love of Christ!O Christ, our Solid Rock, we look to You as the cornerstone of all things. By You all things were created, and You hold all things in Your hands. May we never forget the foundation You lay for us, lest we fall away with the ever-shifting sands. You are holy, and we wholeheartedly desire to build our lives on You, for on You we cannot be shaken. Amen.
