Blessed Assurance

Blessed assurance: Jesus is mine.
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine.
Heir of salvation, purchase of God;
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

Perfect submission, all is at rest.
I, in the Savior, am happy and blessed.
Watching and waiting, looking above;
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
This is my story, this is my song;
Praising my Savior all the day long.

Oh, what a Savior,
Wonderful Jesus.
Death could not hold You,
You are victorious.
Praise to the risen King.

What a blessing, what a gift our salvation through our Lord is! And what’s more, we can be assured of our salvation! John the Beloved, by the power of the Holy Spirit, penned these words: “And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life” (1 John 5:11–13 NLT).

John writes that there is an assurance in life: if you have God’s Son, you have life; if you don’t have God’s Son, you don’t have life. The crux of his statement here is “so that you may know you have eternal life.” So, be encouraged: you may know that you have eternal life by this simple question: do you have God’s Son? Is Jesus yours?

“Blessed assurance: Jesus is mine. Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine…Perfect submission, all is at rest. I, in the Savior, am happy and blessed.” The assurance of our salvation indeed provides us rest and comfort. Nothing can take us away from the grip of our Lord. Furthermore, when we have Jesus, when we are in HIm, we are happy and blessed! This is not a superficial happiness or a general feeling of blessedness. No, our assurance of salvation allows us to feel unending and ultimate happiness, and we possess the greatest blessing of all: Christ himself.

Fanny Crosby wrote this beautiful and joyous hymn in 1873, and the bridge was added in 2013 by Chris Brown and Mack Brock. The newly added lyrics read: “Oh, what a Savior, wonderful Jesus. Death could not hold You, You are victorious. Praise to the risen King.” Our salvation (and the assurance of it) should lead us to worship–to declare the goodness, the wonderful-ness of Jesus. He is victorious over death and the grave. He is victorious over our sinful, wayward hearts. So, thank Him and worship Him!Blessed Redeemer, we thank You not only for our unmerited salvation, but also for the assurance of it. If we have You, Jesus, we have salvation. We pray for the lost in our homes and communities who do not have You. For Your glory (and for their ultimate good), we pray You in your divine grace and mercy would rescue them from their deserved punishment in hell, just as You did for us. Amen.
