Battle Belongs

When all I see is the battle,
You see my victory.
When all I see is a mountain,
You see a mountain moved.
And as I walk through the shadow,
Your love surrounds me.
There’s nothing to fear now,
For I am safe with You.

So when I fight, I’ll fight on my knees
With my hands lifted high;
O God, the battle belongs to You.
And every fear I lay at Your feet;
I’ll sing through the night,
“O God, the battle belongs to You.”
And if You are for me,
Who can be against me?
For Jesus there’s nothing
Impossible for You.
When all I see are the ashes,
You see the beauty.
When all I see is a cross,
God, You see the empty tomb.

Almighty Fortress, You go before us;
Nothing can stand against
The power of our God.
You shine in the shadows,
You win every battle;
Nothing can stand against
The power of our God.

You more than likely remember the epic words of the young David, standing before the giant Goliath: “You come against me with a sword, spear, and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord of Armies, the God of the ranks of Israel…Today, I’ll strike you down, remove your head…Then all the world will know that Israel has a God, and this whole assembly will know that it is not by sword or by spear that the Lord saves, for the battle is the Lord’s. He will hand you over to us” (1 Samuel 17:45–47 CSB).

Phil Wickham and Brian Johnson capture the spirit of David’s words through the melody and lyrics of the chorus: “So when I fight, I’ll fight on my knees with my hands lifted high; O God, the battle belongs to You.” We are reminded of God’s protection: “And if You are for me, who can be against me?…Almighty fortress, You go before us.” The hymn declares with confidence that the battle is not ours to fight, but the Lord’s.

I challenge you: in the face of suffering, temptation, or anything the devil throws at you, remember that God alone is your refuge, your strength, and He fights your battles. Remember Psalm 91:1 (CSB): “The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty.”

God, our ever-present Help and Defense, the battles we face in this life are not won with swords or javelins, charisma or strategy, headlines or comments sections. No, the battle is Yours and Yours alone. Help us to live under Your protection and dwell in Your shadow. Amen.
